Buying my first Piano/Keyboard, Help?

I’ve always wanted to learn to play Piano and now enough is enough I’m done waiting. 2010 will be my year to learn.
I want to buy a very good Piano/Keyboard by Christmas time and I’m not exactly sure how to start finding the best one for me.
I’ve heard of “Digital Pianos” which I’m guessing have the sound of a grand piano but not as big but I’m not exactly sure.
Any suggestions or websites to check out ?

Thanks !

I have played the piano for 11 years!!!!! I love the piano, I prefer a real piano, and upright piano or maybe even a baby grand, or grand piano. However most people cannot afford those. The best kind of digital piano I have had is a yamaha but dont get a cheap yamaha get a little more expensive one because they will have the best quality of sound and sound most like the piano.

I guess if you want to have a piano with a piano feel and not take up much space, you need to have a space-saving keyboard. The Yamaha Clavinova CLP-900 series would be a good bet. Not too much bells and whistles in them, however.

The original Clavinova (Yahama) is also good as a keyboard….both Clavinovas are 2/3 less in space size than a traditional upright acoustic piano.

To really save space, try an M-Audio synthesizer with about 2 1/2 octaves and have a small speaker in order to hear it.

Perhaps a better alternative is to "rent" an upright piano on a monthly basis in which if you later decide that you like the piano, the initial first six month’s rental payments can be applied to the purchase price of the upright. Renting an acoutic piano does not tie up so much money initially, and if you lose interest, you can simply retire the piano back to the rental agent. Stick with a Yamaha, Kawai brand upright. Keyboards simply do not compare to the full sound of an acoutic piano.

    Good luck!
